As technical change reshapes the world economy, intellectual property (IP) has grown in importance and taken on a central economic role. The increasing globalization of economic affairs and the increased knowledge intensity of economic activities have lead to the emergence of knowledge economy. For knowledge based economies, the protection of intellectual property is important for promoting innovation & creativity, developing employment, and improving competitiveness.
Importance of obtaining IPRs and enforcing them has caught on quickly in India’s Diaspora. Indian IP offices have also undergone some major up-gradation in terms of infrastructure, human resources, computerization of IP offices, databases and websites among others.
It is felt that academic institutions will continue to play an important role in facilitating skilled human resource to the industries, government institutions,
academia and R&D. ASSOCHAM considers the optimization of protection and management of IPRs and timeliness to be amongst the priority goals for improvement of the Indian Eco System.
